Background
A metal fabrication shop checks the air in its welding bay periodically. Each reading describes conditions at the time of the visit. Our monitoring follows the bay throughout its operation, giving the safety lead a record of how conditions change across the hours and days between those checks.
The problem
A quarterly spot reading can miss a ventilation problem that occurs at another time. The result leaves the team with isolated observations rather than a history of the bay’s air quality. If conditions change between visits, there is no ongoing reading to draw attention to that period or show how long it lasted.
How we found it
We use CO and CO₂ detectors at the breathing zone, alongside temperature and humidity readings for humidex. The dashboard follows the measurements over time. Threshold alerts go to the safety lead, connecting an out-of-range reading with the person responsible for reviewing the condition and arranging the next response.
What changed
The team has a continuous record in place of periodic readings alone. A change can be seen when it occurs and reviewed afterwards in the history. The alert gives the safety lead a specific time and reading to investigate, while the ongoing record shows whether the condition persists or returns.
The lesson
We make the history useful to the person receiving the alert. In this bay, that means keeping the air-quality readings available with their timing so the team can examine a change and follow what happens next. Continued monitoring helps them review conditions after a response and watch for the same pattern during later operation, instead of waiting for the next scheduled spot check.
