Background

A cold-storage operation needs to keep its chambers within their operating temperature range overnight. The room warms gradually when refrigeration develops a fault. That leaves a period when the chamber reading is changing but the stored product has yet to be affected. Our monitoring focuses on that period.

The problem

A temperature check in the morning comes after the chamber has spent the night unattended. If a fault begins after everyone leaves, the team may first learn about it when they return. By then, they have to assess both the refrigeration problem and what happened to the product while temperatures were changing.

How we found it

We use temperature probes in each chamber, alongside door-state and humidity monitoring. The temperature trace shows when the chamber moves outside its range. SMS alerts with escalation bring that reading to the team, rather than leaving it on a screen waiting for someone to open the dashboard.

What changed

The overnight refrigeration fault triggers a text while nobody is on site. The chamber is brought back into range before product temperature is affected. The team has the temperature history as well as the alert, so the response begins with a record of the change and continues with a view of the chamber returning to range.

The lesson

We make the alert part of the monitoring setup, with a clear route for escalation. A continuous temperature record helps explain what happened, while the notification gets the reading to someone who can respond. The useful check afterwards is whether the chamber has returned to its expected range and remains there through the rest of the night.
